Each state agency in Massachusetts enters their job vacancies onto the Commonwealth Employment Opportunities (CEO) Website and completes their own recruitment and selection process for each job listed. If there are any job postings on the website in which you would like to apply, your resume, cover letter and/or application should be forwarded to the agency that posted the vacancy. When submitting your resume, be sure to reference the CEO Posting ID in your cover letter. A separate resume and cover letter should be sent for each job listing on the CEO.
If you are a Massachusetts Veteran you are entitled to Veterans' preference in civil service exams. If you attain a score of 70% or higher, you are entitled to go to the top of the exam list, with disabled Veterans having top priority. If you apply for a promotional exam, you get two points added to your score. If you apply for a civil service job for which there is no exam, you are entitled to Veterans' preference in a "provisional appointment." If you apply for a position in the labor force, you are not required to take an exam and you go to the top of the list.
Civil Service law covers some of the job openings listed. If you are appointed to a Civil Service position, you will be required to pass a competitive examination when an examination for that position is held. Qualified veterans have preference over non-Veterans in filling job openings covered by Civil Service law. To verify that you meet the definition of a Massachusetts Veteran for the purposes of civil service, please complete and submit to the Human Resources Division the Veteran's Application for Provisional Appointment. The Human Resources Division verification letter should accompany your cover letter, resume and/or application when applying for a provisional civil service job opening.
