Eligible Veterans can receive $1,000 for their first deployment in either Iraq or Afghanistan and are qualified to receive $500 for each subsequent deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan. Veterans can also receive $500 for serving either six or more months stateside or overseas and $250 for each subsequent tour for six or more months overseas outside of Iraq or Afghanistan. The Welcome Home Bonus is 100% tax free and currently there is no time limit to apply for the bonus.
First-time applicants must have at least six months of active service either stateside or overseas and or one or more days in Iraq or Afghanistan on or after September 11, 2001. Subsequent applicants must have at least six months of active service overseas on or after September 11, 2001 and or one or more days of active service in Iraq or Afghanistan.
- Under Chapter 130, Acts of 2005, a Veteran is eligible for the Welcome Home Bonus if they can provide proof of six months of residence in Massachusetts immediately prior to their most recent enlistment or commission into the Armed Forces. Under Chapter 132, Acts of 2009, subsequent applicants must prove six months of residency in Massachusetts immediately prior to their most recent tour or deployment.
All service must be characterized as Honorable. Active service shall not include active duty for training in the Army National Guard, Air National Guard, those in the Naval Academy or active duty for training as a reservist in the armed forces of the United States. Veterans must also be activated under Title 10, not Title 32.
